What is RSS?
RSS stands for “really simple syndication.” It is a format for distributing headlines, updates, or new content to a wide audience. An RSS feed is a popular way for news-related websites, blogs, or other online content publishers to disseminate updates to their content.
Why use RSS?
Website readers who often visit sites with regularly updated content can use RSS to stay informed of the latest content without having to visit each site individually, or subscribe to several newsletters. Updates are provided in a well-organized and easy-to-use format.
What does an RSS feed look like?
An RSS feed includes a list of items, from newest to oldest. The items typically include a title and description of the item, with a link to the web page containing the complete information.
How does RSS work?
Website creators maintain a list of notifications, which is called an “RSS feed,” on their website. Readers interested in the latest content can review this list. “RSS aggregators” are now available that consolidate the results of various RSS feeds for those readers who are interested in updates from several sites.
There are a number of web-based feed aggregators or “readers” available, such as Google Reader, My Yahoo and Bloglines. Users can easily add various RSS feeds to the list of feeds their feed reader checks.
