In June 2009, ACT announced $84,000 in grants to support 17 new initiatives. ACT provides grants of up to $5,000 to local teams made up of municipalities, builders and housing stakeholders who are working to improve planning and building regulations in their communities to lower the cost of housing and increase housing options. ACT received over 400% more applications in this funding round than it received in the previous year. The program continues to promote its offerings across the country, particularly in Eastern Canada and in Québec.
ACT also offers a wealth of proven best practices and lessons learned to help communities benefit from the innovations of others. With financial support from FCM’s Green Municipal Fund, ACT has just completed a new guide on alternative development standards (ADS). Development standards are the rules that municipalities use to guide the planning, design and construction of residential communities. Development standards determine things such as the size and layout of lots, design of streets, amount of parking and stormwater management methods. Ultimately, development standards affect the cost and environmental impact of new developments as well as a community’s quality of life. Alternative Development Standards: A Guide for Practitioners provides an overview of the subject for engineers, planners, builders and other development professionals in a way that highlights proven Canadian examples of ADS.
You can download this publication, along with the accompanying PowerPoint presentation, from the ACT website. Municipal initiatives using alternative development standards may be eligible for an ACT grant.
