Join GMF at the Canadian Brownfields Conference!

October 26–28, 2009

The Westin Bayshore Hotel, Vancouver, B.C.

FCM’s Green Municipal Fund is proud to be a Gold sponsor of the Canadian Urban Institute (CUI) Canadian Brownfields 2009 Conference. This is the premier opportunity for municipalities to share their stories, learn about new technologies and legislation and network with other “brownfielders” from both the private and public sector.

The theme of this year's conference is particularly relevant to today's economic landscape, with a program geared toward the critical issues of reinvestment and stimulation of the economy. The conference features workshops, tours, and three full days of networking in the Brownfields Marketplace. Visit the GMF booth in the Marketplace for more information on our brownfields funding and educational resources. The conference will also feature the 9th Annual CUI Brownie Awards, which recognize excellence in brownfields redevelopment across Canada.

GMF will be hosting two sessions geared toward the needs of municipal governments. The first will be on funding sources for brownfield remediation and redevelopment. It will feature speakers from the private and public sectors and will provide participants with information on existing funding opportunities as well as successful innovative funding approaches from Canadian municipalities.

The second session will showcase the accomplishments of smaller communities that have remediated and redeveloped brownfield sites. In many cases, medium- and smaller-sized municipalities face different challenges and opportunities than those of major urban centres. For example, property values may be much lower and may generate little initial interest from private developers, or a single private-sector organization may own key brownfield sites. This workshop will explore key questions, identify practical solutions and explore best practices for municipalities, as well as provide great opportunities to interact with practitioners who have had experience working with brownfields in smaller communities. Participants will learn how some smaller municipalities benefited from their brownfield sites and how their community can replicate these successes.

We look forward to seeing you there!
