“Green” buildings have become the most important and progressive trend in the construction industry over the last 20 years. To support municipalities in their efforts to reduce the energy consumed by municipal properties, GMF offers loans, usually in combination with grants, for green building projects.
Any municipal government, or municipal utility or corporation wholly owned by a municipal government in Canada may apply for funding. Eligible projects fall into two categories: energy-efficient building retrofits and energy-efficient new building construction. GMF’s funding applies to buildings owned but not necessarily operated by eligible applicants.
Our loan rates for municipalities are 1.5% lower than the Government of Canada bond rate and even further below market rates. We also provide grants for energy feasibility studies and field tests, as well as educational and training resources.
