Getting to 50% and Beyond: Waste Diversion Success Stories in from Canadian Municipalities
“Zero waste” is gaining ground as a long-term goal for waste management, but it doesn’t happen overnight. With all the waste diversion policies, technologies, and programs out there, what is the right mix for your community? How can you take your waste diversion efforts to the next level, and which step will give you the biggest bang for your municipal buck?
To help municipalities address these questions, GMF has produced the latest addition to our Sustainability Solution series, Getting to 50% and Beyond: Waste Diversion Success Stories from Canadian Municipalities. Released during Waste Reduction Week in Canada (October 19–25), this publication showcases municipalities across Canada that have succeeded in diverting 50 per cent or more of their waste, and examines the innovative programs, policies and technologies that helped them get there.
A GMF webinar and a session at the Canadian Waste and Recycling Expo in Vancouver also focused on waste diversion. Our October 21 webinar featured Carey McIver, manager of solid waste at the Regional District of Nanaimo, and Caroline Kirkpatrick, manager of solid waste management at the City of Vaughan. Both Nanaimo and Vaughan are diverting over 50 per cent of their waste from landfill, and have received GMF funding for their diversion programs. Our speakers shared what has worked — and what hasn’t — for their communities, considering the influence of factors such as location, size, public policy, infrastructure, and civic engagement on increasing waste diversion.
