The FCM–CH2M HILL Sustainable Community Awards celebrate excellence in sustainable community development by highlighting the best municipal initiatives that link environmental, social and economic goals. The program has eight categories: brownfields, buildings, energy, planning, residential development, transportation, waste and water. |
The 2009 award winner in the waste category was the City of Victoriaville, Québec. The city’s “Normand Maurice Day” program demonstrates an innovative community engagement strategy and positive environmental impacts. Every October since 1998, local youth from the Groupe Solidarité Jeunesse, in partnership with the City of Victoriaville, go door-to-door to collect hazardous household waste (HHW). The number of participating municipalities is on the rise: in 2006, six municipalities participated in the waste collection; in 2008, this number grew to 20. In October of 2008, Victoriaville was able to divert 44,687 kg of HHW, saving $3,828 in landfill costs.
The “Normand Maurice Day” program is an excellent example of the many benefits that can be achieved through environmental programs. The initiative aims to educate youth and the public about environmental issues, and develop a sense of community responsibility with respect to the environment. Thousands of dollars in savings are realized every year. The program has also created 80 new jobs in Victoriaville.
If your municipality has a waste project or program that you think deserves national recognition, please consider applying for the 2010 FCM–CH2M HILL Sustainable Community Awards. Waste programs or projects from communities of all sizes are encouraged. For more information on the Awards program please visit the GMF website. Applications will be accepted until November 25, 2009 at 5 p.m. (EST). Awards inquiries can be directed to Jessica Mankowski at 613-907-6358 or at awards@fcm.ca.
