Municipal leadership is at the forefront of sustainable community development. The 2006 FCM Sustainable Communities National Conference provided an opportunity for delegates to speak with forward-looking Canadian municipal leaders about how sustainable development can generate a stream of economic, social, environmental, and health benefits for their community and its citizens.
This theme of the conference, building the capacity of municipal governments to implement sustainability, illustrated how municipal governments are leading the implementation of sustainable thinking. Three sub-themes including, the Business Case for Sustainability, Decision Making for Sustainability and Knowledge Transfer, explored how municipalities are tackling issues in an integrated manner.
A Carbon Neutral Event
The Federation of Canadian Municipalities is proud to announce that the 2006 Sustainable Communities National Conference and Trade Show is a Carbon Neutral Conference - the first such conference by FCM in Canada. By assessing conference data it was determined that approximately 188.96 tonnes of carbon dioxide would be released by cars, airplanes and power systems as a result of hosting this event in Ottawa. To offset these climate change-causing emissions, FCM in association with the Tree Canada Foundation will be planting 1133 trees in Canada in the Spring of 2006.
Conference Results
The 2006 Sustainable Communities conference attracted over 500 delegates from across Canada, including municipal representatives from every province and territory. Delegates heard from 60 speakers and enjoyed a 42 booth trade show exhibition full of Canada's leading service providers in the field of sustainable development. Two evening receptions and multiple networking events provided an excellent forum for all delegates to share their ideas, projects and questions.
