Big kudos for small communities: the FCM–CH2M HILL Sustainable Community Awards

While sustainable development is on the radar for municipalities across Canada, small and rural communities may feel disadvantaged by limited resources compared to their larger counterparts. Never fear — a growing number of small communities have proven that sustainable development is indeed possible in smaller settings. In fact, small communities have a lot to teach others about innovation, leadership and creativity, as these award-winning small-town initiatives show.

The small stand tall: leading the charge on climate protection

The FCM–ICLEI Partners for Climate Protection (PCP) program is a network of Canadian municipal governments — large and small — that have committed to reducing greenhouse gases (GHGs) and acting on climate change. Small and rural municipalities dominate membership in the PCP program: about 66 per cent of member municipalities have populations under 50,000, and about half of those have populations under 10,000. Small communities are clearly doing their part!

PCP Update
The past year has seen considerable activity among members of the Partners for Climate Protection (PCP) program. Since March 2008, 23 municipalities have joined PCP and those in the network have completed 40 corporate and 30 community milestones. PCP is pleased to welcome its newest members: the City of Rossland (B.C.), the City of Oshawa (Ont.) and the Village of Notre Dame de Lourdes (Man.).

PCP members are achieving quantifiable reductions in emissions. Results from an initial scan of municipal reductions measures demonstrate that member municipalities have reduced GHGs by 95,000 tonnes through corporate actions and by 249,000 tonnes through community-wide actions. A second measures report is under development.
