GMF welcomes new director
Onno Kremers  We are pleased to welcome Onno Kremers as
the new director of FCM’s Green Municipal Fund.

Prior to his appointment at FCM, Onno worked for various federal government departments including Service Canada, the Privy Council Office, the department of Western Economic Diversification and Parks Canada.

Q&A: City of Sherbrooke
In 2004, in response to the Québec Waste Management Policy, the City of Sherbrooke developed a Waste Management Plan.

The plan included measures that diverted over 54 per cent of the city’s waste in 2008. GMF met with Denis Gélinas, director of the City of Sherbrooke’s urban infrastructure and environment services, to find out more about the plan.

City of Regina’s Building Retrofits  PCP update: New! Greenhouse Gas Reduction Initiatives of the Month 

FCM and ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability are pleased to introduce a new addition to the Partners for Climate Protection (PCP) toolkit. The Greenhouse Gas Reduction Initiative of the Month series will document the initiatives that PCP members have implemented to reduce their emissions. ACT update: Coming soon! Housing in My Backyard: A Municipal Guide for Responding to NIMBY

The ACT (Affordability and Choice Today) program is developing a new guide on how to respond to NIMBY (not-in-my-backyard) opposition to new housing developments. The purpose of the guide is to assist municipal officials and politicians in gaining community acceptance for sound housing developments, including residential intensification projects, secondary suites or publicly sponsored, non-profit, supportive, lower-end-of-market or other forms of affordable housing.

GMF supports municipal brownfields projects

GMF offers loans for brownfield remediation projects at rates far lower than any municipal government can get on the market. Our rates for municipalities are 1.5% lower than the Government of Canada bond rate and even further below market rates. It’s simple: municipal governments can’t find a better rate to finance brownfield remediation.

CMHC funds stronger communities  Through its new Municipal Infrastructure Lending Program, CMHC provides municipalities with low-cost loans for municipal infrastructure projects supporting new or existing residential areas.
